Alternative Therapy Program
At the core of chemical dependency most often one finds an outgrowth of an unfulfilled need for involvement and acceptance. In maintaining our therapeutic approach of acknowledging the needs of our clients, Here’s Help has adapted its treatment components over the years to include innovative modalities that facilitate socialization, increase self-expression and self-esteem. One such initiative is Expressive Therapy, a multi-art approach utilizing the exploration of music and visual art as a means to foster self-awareness and personal growth.
Recognizing this medium as a valuable contributing factor to personal development and artistic interest, Expressive Therapy was launched in 1990 utilizing the professional expertise of John J. Kross, Jr., CEO and Member of the Board of Directors, and Sam C. Zocco, Chief Operations Officer, Chief Clinical Administrator, both executives recognized as on-air personalities for WHYI Radio (Y-100). Today, more than 150 of our 300 residential clients annually participate in Expressive Therapy as an additional component to their clinical interventions. The program’s primary objective is to ultimately free each client from unnecessary limitations imposed by one’s development or by one’s inner dynamics and to empower them to be more self-sufficient, successful and happy with and within his/her life. Clinical therapists note that Expressive Therapy has been highly instrumental in assisting clients in triggering memories, bringing up unresolved issues from the past, regaining a sense of control, and lessening anxiety which facilitates their rehabilitation while augmenting their self-esteem through an appreciation and understanding of the arts.
Today, this program encompasses real-life technology for both the music and art humanities, and has been expanded to include a computer technology program, culinary arts and language arts programs, dental clinic providing free oral health care, and tattoo removal services. Through these various venues clients are encouraged to expand self-awareness in order to heal, overcome self-imposed limitations and obtain greater power and control over their lives. The teaching philosophy values a non-threatening, non-competitive environment with endless opportunities to develop a newly found respect and admiration for the development of new skills and self-esteem. Expressive Therapy participants learn the techniques and tools of varying professionals while experiencing education, artistic exploration, job opportunities, and hands-on entrepreneurship.
